Mogbomoya

An online events aggregator and community sharing platform

The Yoruba people of Nigeria are known to throw some of the best and most memorable parties. With such parties, word often travels quickly and certain people pretend to know the celebrants so they can be a part of the fun. The Yorubas call them Mógbòmoyá - which means Gatecrasher. The Mógbòmoyá App is an online events aggregator that finds the best events around your current location and allow you to plan an event with your friends right on the app. With a first proof-of-concept already developed and tested, how can we improve the overall user experience for the user? I led the design process to audit and redesign the new Mógbòmoyá experience.

THE PROBLEM

An initial version of the app was created before I came joined the team so the first thing I set out to do was to test the current app and complete an audit to pinpoint any problems.

I noticed a lack of consistency between various UI elements like the buttons and text fields and certain redundant information being displayed which increased cognitive load. The onboarding process was very long and uninteresting for an events app and considering the similar products in that space, the experience was lacking. The value to the user was not communicated and action points feel more suggestive rather than helpful.

Once we knew the points/areas of improvement, I went ahead to conduct user research. I set up Google Meet interviews with 12 different prospective users. From the interviews, I created three key personas and various user stories to fit into each user's needs.

Once that was done, I drew up user flows and architectures to help guide the design. Unfortunately, I am currently unable to share more details about this process due to a signed NDA.

THE PRODUCT

The Product Design for the Mogbomoya App was iterative as I shared with some users to test and give feedback. The final screens developed are shown below

OUTCOMES & LEARNINGS

The app is currently in development however, my biggest learnings were on the importance of designing iteratively and having customers involved in key parts of the design process.
